Think back to your last mix, did it sound anything like this?

  • Did the low end of your boomy bass guitar bury your boxy kick drum?
  • Did you lose your snare behind your thin drum beat while the piercing cymbals made the entire high-end sound harsh?
  •  Did your guitars sound tiny and thin, miles away from the sound you heard in your head?
  • Or worst of all, did your vocals sound shrill and sibilant, with the nasal vocal sounding glued on top of the mix?
In short, did you feel defeated by how muddy and weak it sounded?

If so, keep reading to discover how you can finally fix your muddy mixes so that your music sounds like your favorite records.

If you struggle to create depth, balance, and separation in your songs, but you don't know how to make your mixes explode from the speakers like your favorite records - you're not alone.

If you're like most of my students, you run into the same problems every time:
  • You can't fit all the instruments together because you don't know where they sit in the frequency range.
  • You clutter up your low-end because the bass constantly clashes with your kick drum.
  • You don't know how to separate the guitars from each other so they just sound like a muddy mess.
And most importantly, you can't get that big present vocal sound you hear from your favorite artists.

You're getting fed up with mixing because your songs never sound professional enough.

Using EQ feels like a never-ending balancing act

  • When you focus on the low-mids, your mix sounds muddy.
  • Whenever you add high-end, your mix sounds harsh.
  • You don't know how to separate the guitars from each other so they just sound like a muddy mess.
You don't know how much you should boost or cut frequencies to get the sound you hear in your head.

You've tried all sorts of different techniques you've read in blogs or watched on Youtube, but the more you jump from one trick to another, the more contradictory the advice feels. Some people tell you that you should only use subtractive EQ, even though you feel like boosting makes everything sound better.

The problem is, you're scared of damaging your mix because you're never sure whether you're doing the right things to make your mixes clean and present.

You wish somebody would just tell you where the EQ sweet spots were so you could finish your mix and release your record

Instead, they just tell you to "use your ears" when all you want is real, actionable advice.

Even when you know for a fact that you're making your mix sound better, you can't stop EQ'ing because you never know when you're done!

I understand your frustrations completely. I've been there.
Let Me Give You My EQ Shortcuts...
From The Home Studio of Björgvin Benediktsson
Founder of Audio issues
Hi, I'm the musician, audio engineer, and educator behind Audio Issues.

I've worked as a live sound engineer, a broadcast recording engineer, a professional touring musician, a freelance mixing and mastering engineer, and an audio educator. Since 2009 I've been helping people like you turn your amateur demos into professionally produced records you can be proud to release.

I’m the author of the #1 Amazon best-seller, Step By Step Mixing: How to Create Great Mixes Using Only 5 Plug-ins and the business parable, You Get What You Give: A Simple Story for Finding Success in the Music Business.

My music production techniques have helped thousands of musicians and producers gain the confidence and skills to make professional music they can be proud to release.

The Audio Issues EQ is the plug-in I wish I had when I was starting out and I'm excited to share it with you today so you can fix your muddy mixes, remove the harshness from your high-end, and add that professional sheen to make your mixes radio-ready and release-worthy.
The Audio Issues EQ is an intuitive dual-module EQ that translates confusing frequencies into real world vocabulary instead of numbers.

When you use the Audio Issues EQ, you'll know exactly how to EQ problematic frequencies to make your tracks fit better in the mix. In addition, whenever you need to enhance your tracks the simple user interface effortlessly adds more power, attitude, presence, or weight to your mix to make your music stand out.

The Top-Module Visual EQ Helps You Eliminate What You Don't Like

The top-module is a visual EQ that shows you exactly where to remove common frequency areas so you know exactly where to EQ your tracks depending on what kind of problems you’re hearing in your mix.

You'll have access to a pre-analyzer that shows you the incoming signal before being affected by your EQ moves. You also have access to a post-analyzer that shows you how the frequency response changes according to your EQ moves.

The top-module visual equalizer includes:
  • Low and high-pass filters with 6 - 18 dB/octave slopes
  • A shelving EQ on each side of the frequency spectrum
  • A four-band parametric. +-20 dB boost/cut EQ so that you can easily eliminate any annoying frequency problems in seconds
  • Variable Q to create narrow or broad boosts to dial in your desired sounds
  • Solo-band functionality on each band so you can hear only the frequency you're trying to search for
  • On/Off and reset functions on every band

The Bottom-Module Enhances The Sounds You Love

The bottom-module is a boost-only additive EQ focused on the flattering frequencies you want to add to your tracks to enhance the sound of your music.

You can switch between two different frequency characteristics in each one of the seven slots depending on your needs:
  • Thump and Punch
  • Warmth and Weight
  • Tone and Power
  • Attitude and Edge
  • Bite and Clarity
  • Presence and Brilliance
  • Air and Space
Changing the Focus knob on the left and right-most slots changes the EQ shape from a shelving EQ to a parametric curve.

You'll also be able to focus the exact amount you want to enhance your tracks with the gain and focus knobs, and the input and output faders allow you to easily gain-stage your tracks for cleaner mixes.

Plus: You'll also get a library of presets to work from with the best starting points for all the most common instruments you'll find working with your music. They are designed differently than other plug-in presets because I show you the starting points where you can get the exact sound you're looking for with minimal effort, as opposed to the arbitrary presets you'll find in other plug-ins that have nothing to do with the sound you're trying to achieve that you hear in your head.

Don't Just Take my Word For It...
See What Students Have Said About Their EQ Experience!
"really gave me a sense of how essential EQ'ing is to the process. It helped me take my mixes from muddy and boomy to fairly clear, and definitely helped me get some punch into kicks and basses. Some really basic things that I hadn't even considered, which really changed the way I approach music: like EQ'ing the reverb and delay effects themselves to avoid conflicts on different frequencies...it does an effective job of squeezing much information into little time, and the formulations are clear and pedagogical. The amount of useful information I gained from the course was impressive and I am extremely grateful for having been given these gems!"
Maximillian, Home Studio Producer
"I'm able to get a clean and tight low end on this song I'm working on. I cut some of the mud out of the kick and bass, then I let the kick have a little extra 50 Hz and added a little bit around 800 Hz on the bass guitar. That made the low end clear and punchy. This song has an acoustic guitar as one of the main instruments and I decided to put an HPF up to 200 Hz and added a little bit around 3 kHz and it sounds good so far. This is a great guide to get things moving in the right direction!!! Thank You!!!!"
Jeff Smith, Mixing Engineer
"An immediate and hugely practical understanding of the frequency spectrum and fantastic examples of positive and negative aspects of the key audio frequency bands as related to achieving better mixes. A superbly comprehensive and humorously written book by someone with lots of practical experience.

What is a Langspil?
You may have noticed the EQ preset "Langspil" in the promotional images on this site and elsewhere. I chose the preset "Langspil" because it's a horrendous-sounding traditional Icelandic instrument that sounds like a cat scratching its nails down a chalkboard while simultaneously coughing up a hairball while a baby is being woken up by a 28K dial-up modem.

In terms of EQ curves, making a Langspil sound better would probably look something like that, and if the Audio Issues EQ can make a Langspil sound better, it'll work for anything you throw at it!
